Patterns to reuse

Talking about what you did (past tense)

Emma est arrivée à Lyon un samedi matin

Emma arrived in Lyon on a Saturday morning

In French, we often use 'être' or 'avoir' to say what we did.

je suis/j'ai + past participle

  • je suis arrivé(e)
  • j'ai visité
  • j'ai cherché

Use this pattern to talk about actions completed in the past.

How to ask for help politely

elle a demandé de l'aide à une femme à l'arrêt

she asked a woman at the stop for help

To ask for something, use 'demander' + noun or phrase.

demander de l'aide à + person/place

  • demander des informations à quelqu'un
  • demander un café au serveur

This structure lets you request help or information politely.

Instead of…

Au lieu de paniquer, elle a demandé de l'aide

Instead of panicking, she asked for help

Use this to show a contrasting action.

Au lieu de + infinitive, subject + action

  • Au lieu de courir, il a marché
  • Au lieu de manger ici, nous sommes sortis

This chunk lets you explain what someone did instead of another option.
